It was a tough school year for my little man. He was bullied all year-long. He was called names, rejected and excluded! This bullying had disastrous effects on his self-esteem. He no longer knows how to behave with the others. He lost confidence in himself ! He is now a lonely little man who is afraid to engage into conversation, who is afraid of getting bullied. It was a tough situation for him and for all the family members. To alleviate this we tried to boost his self-esteem with some games. They had great results.
Self-Esteem Boosting Games you can play with your child
1 Let Him Teach his little sibling
My son is 11 and my daughter is 4. She is learning how to count, how to write her name. To make him feel important and boost his self-esteem, I ask my son to teach her some basic skills. He teaches her the alphabet while playing with her Lego. He helped her making an alphabet train. He helped her with the numbers while building a dot-dot game. Allowing the older child to teach the little siblings is a great way to let their confidence shine.
2 Let him help you with chores
Most children don’t like helping with chores, cleaning their room! But if you tell your child that mommy needs your help and you are the best person to do that. Your child will feel important. He will have that sense of accomplishment. My son loves cooking! Once a week, he prepares breakfast for the family! It is a real treat for him. Of course I supervise all his actions but I do not intervene.. He loves making those delicious easy crepes for breakfast and he is so proud of the results. It is a great way to boost his self-confidence and self-esteem.
3 Role Play
Since my child does not know how to deal with some situations such as name calling, isolation and other bullying situations, I play the following game with him: Role Play. I play the role of a child being picked on and him the bully! For each situation, I give him answers and ways to defend himself! We play for 15 minutes then we practise. He plays the role of the child and I ask him to defend himself. Knowing how to react to certain situations, will certainly boost his self-esteem and his confidence
4 Make a Happy List
A child can improve his self-esteem when he recalls positive events in his life. Your child needs to write 5 positive events that happened to him. He should describe the event and how he felt. Hang this list in his room, next to his bedroom. It can be a great read before he goes to bed or on those specific sad days.
5- The positive game
It involves 2 players or more. Each player chooses a specific letter of the alphabet. Then he must tell a positive trait that he sees in the other player, by using that letter. It will help increase his self-esteem and enriches his vocabulary. It is great if you can play it with some friends.
We play these games regularly. My son feels better and I am happy. Setting kids up for success at school (and at life!) means lots of important things. One of them is to find ways, games to Let Their Confidence Shine – Build their confidence and self-esteem!
