How to Choose Baby Shoes

Are you ready to go shopping for your baby’s first shoe? If so, it’s important to look at a few different factors to make sure you have the right shoe for your child. You’ll want to check things such as how comfortable it is, as well as how safe it is, in order to know which pair of shoes you should invest in.

Does It Stay On?

When buying your baby shoes for the first time, you’ll want to make sure that you buy a pair that actually stays on your baby’s feet! The last thing you want is to buy a pair of loose shoes that constantly fall off. Not only will this make it harder for your baby to move around, you also run the risk of losing the shoe entirely.

Does It Have Rubber Soles?

Even if your baby isn’t walking or crawling yet, you’ll want to make sure that your baby’s first shoes has rubber on the bottom. Shoes with rubber on the bottom will help your baby grip the floor when getting around. This is much safer for your baby since they won’t slip and fall down from not having any type of grip on the bottom.

Is It Comfortable?

You’ll also want to make sure that your baby’s first shoes are comfortable. If your baby is younger, you could even decide to go with a pair of shoes that’s like a sock on top with a rubber sole attached to the bottom. This will help make your baby’s feet comfortable without compromising on safety.

Ask for Recommendations

The best way to decide which pair of shoes to buy for your baby is to ask your family and friends for any recommendations. Ask them if their children preferred a certain shoe and which ones they think your baby can’t do without. After getting recommendations, you can take your baby to the shoe store and test out a few of them.

Shop In-Store Only

Realistically, you’ll find the best first pair of shoes for your baby in the store, not online. All babies have different feet, so a pair of shoes that fits on a friend’s baby might not be comfortable for your child. Because of this, you’ll want to take your baby in-store and do your shopping there. Test out the different pairs and check prices in order to find the pair you want.

Awh I remember choosing my sons first shoes last year, such great memories. He had the cutest little shoes and the shop staff were so helpful in making sure they fit correctly.

  3. I’m a firm believer in not getting shoes til a year old. Then once I start looking, I pretty much follow what you’ve stated!

  5. Great ideas to keep in mind when picking shoes for your child. It’s so hard to make sure your getting the right ones when the child is too little to give you feedback on how they feel on their foot.

  6. These are some really great tips!! My hubby is shoe obsessed so when it came to my daughters first pair….. He just had to be incharge of it! Jordan’s it was for her even though I’m a sneaker hater lol…. I let him have his happy shoe moment though lol

  7. Who knew all these things I had to think about! Some great tips in here for sure – especially rubber soles! Makes sense though doesn’t it.

  8. I would add making sure that they do up with laces or some other method that the baby can’t undo, lol! I’ve had wonderfully expensive, high quality shoes that didn’t end up getting worn because I would keep having to put them back on, again and again and again. Laces with double knots are my go-to solution, lol!

  9. great tips! thank you. the first shoes experience can be overwhelming for a first time parent – who knew something so simple would require so much thought.. glad to have helpful tips!

These are great tips. My kids didn’t own shoes until they were about a year old because they couldn’t walk until then.

I must admit I was quite excited when I went shopping for the very first shoes for my first baby – the novelty had worn off by number 7 though :-) Some very good pointers for those who will be doing this for the very first time.
