My Baby Stole My Sleep

So, you’ve broken up with sleep? Yeah, so did I…We had a great relationship; full of ups and downs, but for the most part it was magical. And now you can’t even remember the last time you spoke, right? Me neither.  It may seem like you are stranded on Lack of Sleep Island, but you’re not alone. In fact, you are among the rest of us sleep-deprived people that dream of sleeping in till 9 a.m. And for all the lucky moms out there whose infants sleep until that time, just know that I don’t like you (just kidding! It’s more like I mom-envy you).

My son wakes up between 6-6:30 a.m. EVERY morning. It doesn’t matter what time he goes to bed or if he skipped a nap, it’s still the SAME time.  All the sleep experts out there gave me advice about putting him on a better schedule, feeding him cereal to fill him up=more sleep, keeping him awake more throughout the day will work or letting him cry it out.  Well, nada worked! You would think that at about six months it would get easier, but I have to admit that I am no dream boat on lack of sleep—in fact, I am Cruella De Ville.

So why is this sleep thing such a hot topic? One of the first questions that I am asked by just about everyone is, “How is Jett sleeping through the night?” It’s almost as if it’s some sort of competition to see if you baby beat their baby. It got to the point where I would just say yes to avoid the look of ‘sorry’.  But, alas, the sleepless nights did not last and the sweet woman that my husband once married was back in town!

Here are a few things that I have learned:

  • Sleep when your baby sleeps;
  • There is no magic age to when your baby will sleep through the night;
  • Don’t compare your baby with the sleep expert’s baby;
  • Do what works best for you & your baby;
  • Take turns with your partner;
  • Drink a LOT of coffee; and
  • It won’t last forever

One thing that always helped me during the first few months was remembering that the lack of sleep won’t last forever. Eventually, they will sleep through the night and you will wake up in a panic wondering if they are okay because YOU woke up first. Then again, 18 years from now, you will be up waiting by the door with baggy eyes wondering why they missed curfew. Such is life…

  1. I believe in the Farber technique for getting your baby to sleep through the night. Well it worked for me, but every kid is so different! And you never know when colic will hit!
