Cloth vs. Disposable Diapers: Which is More Practical for Swimming?

Cloth vs. Disposable diapers: which will hold up better in the water? With summer rapidly approaching, we tackled the age-old question and answered it!

During a chat with friends about all the summer fun we couldn’t wait to have, one mom brought up an interesting question. She wanted to know why moms chose cloth diapers versus disposable diapers for swimming classes. Several moms said they worked better, but she wondered if they were also more practical. We took that as a challenge to come up with an answer!

Have you ever tried to use a disposable diaper in the pool? You will quickly discover that disposable diapers explode in water! But are cloth diapers any better? The age old question of “cloth versus disposable: which is better for swimming?” still remains.

Cloth Versus Disposable Diapers: Which is Better for Swimming?

Cloth is More Durable

When you look at a cloth diaper you’ll notice that they are more durable. When paired with plastic pants in the water, cloth diapers are nearly invincible in the water and can withstand anything thrown their way.

Cloth Diapers Last Longer

Cloth Diapers do not need to be thrown away after one use in the pool. Instead, you can use cloth diapers over and over again. A quick wash will help a cloth diaper become as good as new again, which also makes them incredibly practical.

Cloth Diapers are More Flexible

When compares to a disposable diaper, cloth diapers are much more flexible and allow baby to swim around more freely in the water. The stretchy elastic on the legs of cloth diapers allow the baby to swim more naturally.

Disposable Diapers are Super Cheap

A lot of people are drawn to using disposable diapers for swimming because they are super cheap. This means that the cost to use a disposable diaper while swimming is as cheap at 20 cents a diaper.

Disposable Diapers Can Weigh Baby Down

Although humans tend to weigh less in the water, disposable diapers tend to weight baby down in the water. Disposable diapers can get incredibly heavy and only add to the difficulty of trying to maneuver in water. You want baby to feel light in the water and not heavy and unable to move.

Which is More Practical for Swimming?

Based on the evidence, cloth diapers are way more practical for swimming. Disposable diapers are bulky and not very practical in the swimming department. It’s well worth spending a couple of extra bucks on a cloth diaper that you can use over and over again for the purpose of swimming.

Which did you use for swimming: cloth or disposable? What are your thoughts?

I used cloth nappies on my kids when they were small but I wouldn’t have trusted them to keep everything ‘in’ whilst swimming. Plus they would have absorbed a ton of water too. Might be that this problem has been surmounted these days though. :-)

  2. A lot of people will appreciate this post, thanks for sharing! We’re using cloth for sure, second year now :)

  3. I prefer cloth because they fit more snug. When using disposables, I find myself stuck with 3/4 of a pack because I only needed a few of them.

  4. This is a good list! I never would have considered cloth for swimming but I’m now open to it!

  5. I think my parents used cloth diapers when I went swimming because they said I would just take the disposables off. I don’t think many children like a wet bulky diaper.

  6. I think getting those disposable swim pants for babies would be the best bet. While cloth diapers do last longer, they don;t keep pee and poo out of the water.

  7. We used swimmers which were disposable but somehow didn’t hold all the water in. I forget what the brand was but they worked really well.

  8. I would say it depends on the Parent and their lifestyle. When I was younger my parents used ‘Nappies” a.k.a “Cloth Diapers” while today they are now all the rage. Whatever works best for your lifestyle

I never would have taken my kids swimming in cloth diapers. I am all about disposables.
