5 Ways to Comfort Your Baby Through a Cold

First things first: this is not meant to be taken as medical advice. Please call your pediatrician at the first sign of illness to make sure that your baby is actually dealing with a cold and not something more serious.

  1. Help them breathe easier

Having a stuffed-up nose is no fun! You can’t really give your baby a decongestant (unless your doctor prescribes them, you should never give your tiny tot OTC cold medicines), so you have to find other ways to keep their nasal passages clear.

One way is by using hydraSense® Ultra-Gentle Mist. The Ultra-Gentle Mist is made with a safety neck that is specifically designed for your baby’s tiny nostrils. It’s made with 100% naturally sourced ingredients, can be used up to 6 times per day for nasal symptoms, and it doesn’t contain medications or preservatives.

You can follow up with a nasal aspirator. FYI, that’s the technical name for what I call “nose suckers.” Inhale through the mouth piece to gently draw out mucus. I suggest picking up a hydraSense Baby Nasal Care Nasal Aspirator Starter Kit. It comes with an aspirator, 5 Easydose® vials and 5 filters.

Still not sure how to use a nasal aspirator? This video will help:

  1. Keep the air moist

Avoiding dry air is one way to comfort your baby through a cold. You might want to stick a humidifier in the nursery. It’s also a good idea to put one in other rooms throughout the house where your baby spends the most time. Make sure you’re using cool mist (versus warm) and change the water every day. That’s SUPER important, as germs absolutely love stagnant water.

  1. Dress your baby in layers

How do you feel when you have a cold? If you’re like me, you’re either too hot or too chilly. I’m always changing from lightweight jammies to thicker fleece, and back again. Easy enough for an adult, right? Not so easy when you have a grumpy baby that doesn’t really like being changed to begin with!

Make life easier on yourself and your tot by dressing him in layers. Throughout the day, pay attention to your baby’s skin. Is it warm and sweaty? Take off one of the thicker layers. Cold and clammy? Add a layer back on. Don’t overdo it, though. You don’t want to overheat your baby, especially if you typically keep your house warm.

4.Know what to watch out for

Part of comforting your baby through a cold is knowing what to watch for to make sure it’s not evolving into something worse. My rule of thumb: if something doesn’t seem right, call the doctor. Don’t worry about being that mom who calls every time her baby sneezes. Pediatricians are used to it. Things to watch out for include:

  • Fewer wet diapers than usual (could signify dehydration)
  • Redness or discharge around the eyes
  • A persistent cough
  • Green nasal discharge that lasts several days

If your baby absolutely refuses to nurse or take fluids, or coughs so hard that her skin changes color, head to the emergency room.

  1. Bring on the snuggles!

Snuggling is one of the best (and easiest!) things you can do to comfort your baby through a cold. Aside from the obvious benefits (your baby will love being close to you), giving extra love and snuggles helps you keep a closer eye on your baby…literally. Skin-to-skin contact in particular has tremendous benefits, especially for newborns. While it’s typically in preemies or right after birth, it’s also a great way to give a little extra comfort when your baby isn’t feeling well.

As much as we’d love to protect our babies and keep them from ever getting sick, colds are a part of life. Newborns are especially prone to them because their immune system hasn’t matured yet. You can’t completely prevent them, but these tips will help make them a little easier for your baby to get through.
