My son is teething.  Just about every mom everywhere may have just heaved a sigh of empathy.  I think moms may get some sort of amnesia when it comes to our babies teething because I don’t remember my daughter being this upset.  He just doesn’t seem to be happy with anything.

He has been in so much pain. Low grade fevers, crying, just plain uncomfortable.  Not even his sister could make him laugh, and she could always make him laugh. How do I help my little dude get through this rough time? Check out my favorite tips for dealing with teething pain!

5 Tips for Dealing with Teething Pain

Be patient

I might need to take my own advice on this one.  When your little one is screaming at the top of his lungs for hours at a time, you might feel like pulling your own hair out (but don’t, you won’t be happy about that once the teething has passed)!  It is easy to forget in the midst of the screaming and crying (your baby that is) that he is in pain from his teeth cutting through.  Take a few deep breaths, lock yourself in the bathroom for a moment if you must, and calm yourself down before returning to your baby.

Give him something cold

Whether it is a frozen washcloth, or a teething ring you’ve got from the store, something cold and even frozen will help to alleviate some of the pain from teething.  My son had an “ice cream cone” that we kept in the fridge, and he got so excited when I took it out.  He would chomp on that for a while, and it would numb the area.

Rub his gums

Pressure is good for tooth pain.  Just make sure your finger is clean (I think that goes without saying!).  Your baby is probably going to want to chomp down on your finger, so be sure you steer clear of any teeth that might already be there.  We don’t want any blood shed!

Dry the drool

Teething is bad enough; you don’t want to have to deal with a secondary condition such as skin irritation from excessive drool.  I keep a bib on my son while he is cutting teeth. It helps to dry the drool on his face quickly. I don’t need him having chapped skin in addition to his teething.

Baby Orajel  Homeopathic Teething Gel

A friend suggested I try using Baby Orajel™ Homeopathic Teething Gel.  I wondered what was so different, why was it homeopathic?  This teething gel is free of Benzocaine, Belladonna, and Paraben.  In my eyes, less is better when it comes to ingredients for teething gel.  I found out that it is actually recommended for you to use Benzocaine-free teething solutions if your child is under 24 months.  I was unaware of this with my first (sounds like I did things a little backwards, I’m always learning new things with my second!).  That made the decision easier when deciding what kind of teething gel to use with my son in order to help relieve his pain from cutting teeth.

I know Orajel™ (don’t we all?) and trusted that it would work just like their other pain relieving products.  I immediately tried Baby Orajel™ Homeopathic Teething Gel with my son.  Usually, he turns his head and tries to get away from the taste of the typical gel, but he didn’t seem to mind this one.  Bonus!  I was able to enjoy my sweet baby boy again, and he was able to play and laugh and do things other than be in pain from cutting teeth. My daughter was able to play with him and make him laugh, so she was happy again too!

I’m thankful for Baby Orajel™ right now for creating something like their Homeopathic Teething Gel that is helpful and not chemically harmful to my baby and allowing all of us to enjoy him again!  Not much is worse than when your child is in pain and there is little you can do.

If you have a teething tot at home, use these tips and Baby Orajel™ Homeopathic Teething Gel to ease the pain! These tips for getting rid of teething pain may help make the time a little less stressful. Definitely go out and get some Baby Orajel™ Homeopathic Teething Gel!  It is meant for those babies under 24 months (just like my little dude).  While you are there, you should also check out their tooth and gum cleansers.  Baby Orajel™ Elmo Tooth & Gum Cleansers comes with either a finger brush or a toothbrush (which is what I use now that he’s got 6 teeth!).  You will find them pretty much anywhere you shop for your tooth care products.

  1. Great post! There’s so many things to help babies that are teething now, it’s great! My SIL makes these fruit popsicles for my nephew so it’s something cold on his gums and nutritious too!

  2. Teething is the worst :( we actually used orajel the other day on my 7 year old to help him wiggle out a tooth that had been lose since november!

  3. The frozen wash cloth has always been my family’s go to! None of my kiddos really cared for the teething gel filled toys, plus the hard outer plastic seemed to cause more pain rather than relieving pain.

  4. Oh what a poor little dude. I’ve never had kids, but I’ve seen friends’ kids go through teething and it was rough. Poor thing.

  5. Ann Bacciaglia

I will have to share this with my friend. Her little one is teething right now and is having a hard time.

  6. We used Baltic Amber teething necklaces with both of my kiddos, and I do believe they helped, however there were still times I reached for teething gel. I also let them gnaw on frozen wash cloths. That seemed to help too

  7. I remember the teething days with my girls. I usually did the frozen washcloths or teething gel. Both seemed to work great.

  8. My son was miserable when he was teething and how I wish I knew about this gel. Couldn’t exactly remember what we did to help him with the pain. It has been 13 years ago. :)

  9. I second the frozen washcloth! I watched one little guy that had teething pain so badly. His gums would actually bleed when the teeth were cutting. The washcloth was the one thing that worked!

  10. Teething pain is the worst sometimes, especially if it causes them to be super miserable. These are great tips for helping kids to cope with teething pain.

  11. I remember when my son went through this and I was desperate to try anything to relieve the pain. I’m happy that I am passage point to my sister-in-law is just about to get into it. I have to tell her about him your tips.

  12. Gum massage or rub certainly helps. Thanks for these tips, they will surely come in handy especially for first time parents.

  13. I think dealing with teething of your kid is a bit sensitive thing to do, but patience is the first step to make sure all gets better. The Baby Orajel Gel is pretty new for me, but sounds like a good resource to get some relief needed.

  14. What a timely post! My grandson is almost at this stage and we have to prepare for his “moods.” I would tell my daughter to ask the pediatrician about the teething gel too.

  15. Teething at any age is horrible. My soon to be 1 year old has 4 top and 2 bottom teeth already. All 4 of the top teeth came in at the same time and he was miserable for almost 2 weeks. It was horrible. I was giving him Orajel, the mesh fruit nets with cold fruits, and teething toy I could find but most importantly, I was trying to keep his chin dry. He still got a little rash though :(

  16. Teething can be a pain, sleepless nights, endless crying, and yep, tons of drool! I love these tips, they definitely help. I also used a gel to ease the pain my girls felt when they were teething.

  17. It’s good to be reminded that I am not alone hehe. My son has the hardest time with teething. He is 17 months old today and he still gets fussy and is in a lot of pain when new teeth pop up.
