With cold season well underway, if you haven’t already stocked up on baby cold care essentials, now is the time. It’s better to be prepared than find yourself scrambling to soothe your tiny tot’s symptoms at 2AM! Here's what to include in your kit!

What to Put in Your Baby Cold Care Kit

First things first: the information in this post is not meant to be taken as medical advice. Talk to your pediatrician about the best course of action when your baby has a cold.

1.  hydraSense Baby Nasal Aspirator Starter Kit

A baby cold care kit needs a saline solution to help keep little noses from getting all blocked up.  hydraSense is the #1 choice of moms in Canada, and it’s easy to see why. The sterile saline solution is made with 100% naturally sourced sea water and contains no chemicals or medications.

I highly recommend the hydraSense® Baby Nasal Aspirator Starter Kit because it has what  you need in one handy package. It includes 1 nasal aspirator, 5 Easy Dose vials, and 5 single-use filters.

The EasyDose vials are one of my favourite hydraSense products because they’re  easy to use.  Each one has a carefully measured dose that’s for tiny noses.

After you apply the drops, you’ll use the nasal aspirator to draw out the mucus. Not sure how to use one? This video will help!

I also recommend keeping a bottle of hydraSense Ultra-Gentle Mist on hand to use throughout the day in between aspirator uses when baby is sick with a stuffy nose. Like the solution in the EasyDose vials, the Ultra-Gentle Mist is made with 100% naturally sourced sea water. It has a comfort tip designed especially for tiny noses.  You can use it up to 4-6 times a day when your baby is congested.

2. A good thermometer

With so many different types of thermometers on the shelves, it’s hard to know which one to choose. Years ago, I would have told you to go with a plain old digital thermometer because they work well for both rectal and underarm temperature taking. Thermometer technology has improved by leaps and bounds over the years, though.

Tympanic thermometers (in the ear) are a popular choice. If you’ve got an extra squirmy baby, you can even go with those thermometers that glide over the forehead. Whichever type you choose, it’s a good idea to take a few “control” readings when your baby is healthy. I’ve found that the forehead thermometers read up to 1.5 degrees lower than an oral thermometer, depending on the brand.

3. A cool-mist humidifier

While hydraSense Baby Nasal Care will help moisten your baby’s nasal passages and clear out mucus, it’s a good idea to keep a cool-mist humidifier running in the nursery, especially during naptime and overnight. Make sure you change the water every day, even if it still has plenty left in the reservoir. Germs and bacteria just love standing water.

Wondering why you should choose a cool-mist versus warm mist humidifier? Basically, cool mist units are more portable, easier to maintain, and cover a larger room area.

4. Fever reducers

Talk to your doctor before you give your baby any medications, especially for the first time. I keep both acetaminophen and ibuprofen on hand. Again, talk to your baby’s doctor to find out the right dose and schedule.

5. Emergency phone numbers

Along with the basic medical necessities, you should also keep all the important phone numbers that you could possibly need on one sheet in your baby cold care kit. Numbers to put on your list include:

  • Your pediatrician’s regular phone number (and the extension you need to dial to reach a human right away, if applicable).
  • Pediatrician’s after-hours phone number, if different from the office number.
  • Name, address, and number for the nearest urgent care or emergency department.
  • Poison control number (just in case, you can never be too careful).

If you have older kids in the house, you may also want to keep the number of a good babysitter that can come quickly in case you need to take your little one to the doctor or urgent care.

Depending on your baby and preferences, other items to keep on hand include fresh sealed pacifiers or bottle nipples (so you can toss the germy ones), moist nose wipes, and a new baby toy to help distract your tot when you’re administering medications or taking his temperature (preferably something that you can easily sanitize). Keep these supplies together in a bin or a shelf so they’re right at hand when you need them!

I totally hate it when the kids get sick especially the babies. But what can we do! It’s how it usually is. I think these are all important to have in your care kit.

  4. This a great list to remember to help alleviate the baby especially when s/he is sick. It must be really alarming to find out something is wrong and a relief to know that you have these to help remedy the situation!

  7. I wish there was Hydrasense for when my kids were still babies. It would have helped us out so much! But we use it as adults now and they’re also the best for seasonal allergies.

  8. Never had anything like the HydraSense when I was raising children. Wonderful to know there are great products out there to help little one feel better.

  9. The aspirator and saline were a must through both of my boys early years. I’ve never seen an aspirator like this one, it’s interesting looking.

  10. This is such a great list of essentials to have on hand when your baby has a cold. Thermometers have certainly changed since my kids were babies. I used the old fashioned kind and they were so hard to read at times.

  11. These are all super important to have on hand. I never realized how much I would use a nasal aspirator until I had my first baby.

This is a really great, informative post! I don’t have any kiddos as of yet, but this is definitely a post I’d come back to when the time is right. The humidifier is definitely a great idea.

  13. Our cool mist humidifier helps keep colds at bay. It is important to change the water daily. Even though the water may appear clean there can be alot of germs hanging out in that water.

  14. These are all important things to keep on hand. Emergency numbers are so,etching you don’t want to have to hunt down while panicking.

  15. I wish some of the stuff was around with my kiddos were little. I would have definitely used it. I like the more natural way of getting stuff done and obviously the stuff is exactly what I was looking for.

  16. I’m not familiar with hydraSense. I can say when my boys were babies the nasal aspirator and saline sprays were a must have year round particularly in the winter.

  17. Oil of oregano is my number one baby cold fighter. For nights when they were so stuffy and choking on phlegm, I would take 1 drop of oil of oregano and dilute it in olive or coconut oil and rub under their feet, this cleared their congestion and gave them (and me) at least a few hours of sleep. We still use it, it’s a wonderful thing!

  18. Oh wow the nasal HydraSense looks awesome I wish I had those when my babies were little! Definitely packed with good advice here :)

  19. These are definitely all must haves for a baby cold care kit. Having everything on hand will make your life so much easier when everyone is sick.

  20. HydraSense sounds like a lifesaver for when colds hit the little babies. My cousin just had her baby 2 months ago so I’ll be sure to recommend she has it on hand in case her baby catches a bug this winter.

Hydrasense is so vital to have for kids when they have colds! They don’t know how to blow their nose at such a young age so everything accumulates but this stuff really helps.

  22. I’m so glad they’ve come up with a way to keep our babies’ nasal passages nice and moist. It’s important for keeping them comfortable during these really dry months.

  23. Those were great tips for any mother during these cold months. I love that Hydra sense aspirator so helpful for congestion.
