Fighting off nasal cold symptoms in newborns isn’t an easy task. As parents, we can’t stand to see our babies dealing with sniffles,  and all the other unpleasant symptoms of a cold. Yet, at the same time, we’re cautioned against using pretty much all of the traditional medicines that we’d reach for to soothe our older children.

Fortunately, there are plenty of non-medicated solutions to help your tiniest tot, including using hydraSense® Baby Nasal Care to clear up those little noses. Read on for my favorite cold symptom solutions for parents of newborns, then learn more about how hydraSense® can help your baby with nasal congestion.

As always, please remember that this is not meant to be taken as medical advice. Always talk to your pediatrician about the best ways to care for your newborn.

Add humidity to the air 1,2

Adding a bit of moisture to the air is one thing you can do to help soothe your newborn’s cold symptoms. Use a cool-mist humidifier in your nursery. Just make sure you clean it out every day.

Use a nasal spray designed for newborns

A nasal spray will be your best friend to clear out those little noses. It’s important to choose something designed for newborns, though, as sprays for older kids and adults may not be suitable to give to your baby.

hydraSense® Ultra-Gentle Mist, made by the #1 nasal care brand in Canada for children3 is an  option because it’s 100% natural sourced and contains no medications or preservatives. It comes in three different forms: hydraSense® Ultra-Gentle Mist, Easydose® vials and a Nasal Aspirator. The Ultra-Gentle Mist is made with a safety neck specially designed for baby’s nostrils. It may be used up to 6 times a day.

I used hydraSense® for nasal congestion on my son when he was little. He was a winter baby, born right in the height of cold season. Within the first month, he had his first case of the sniffles. hydraSense® Ultra-Gentle Mist helped clear him right up.

Head to the bathroom

When my son was tiny, he caught a cold that gave him a horrible cough. A trip to his pediatrician determined that he just had the common cold. My son’s doctor recommended spending more time in the bathroom as the warm moisture in the air could help ease congestion due to a cold.4

A warm bath can go a long way to soothing discomfort, while steam from the shower can help loosen up mucus in the chest. Remember, you’re not getting into the boiling hot shower with your baby! Just run the water and let the steam fill up the room, kind of like a sauna, but keep a safe distance. As an added bonus, if you’re also suffering from a cold, the steam will help loosen up your congestion as well.

Make sure your baby has plenty of fluids

We all know that fluids help when we have a cold, so it makes sense that your newborn will need more, too. Since babies this young are drinking breastmilk or formula exclusively, that may mean increasing the number of feedings throughout the cold. Babies under 6 months of age shouldn’t be given water or other fluids unless your doctor gives the okay.

While there is still no cure for the common cold, following these tips along with your pediatrician’s recommendations will help your newborn get through the worst of the symptoms. I highly recommend preparing in advance for cold season. You don’t want to find yourself standing next to your crying baby’s crib at 2AM and realize that you have nothing on hand to soothe a stuffy nose. Get your humidifier ready ahead of time and stock up on hydraSense® Baby Nasal Care. It’s available at your local mass food and drug retailer or online at Amazon.ca.
