There are 7 things I do when the kids aren’t around. Ok, there are more I am sure, but these are the 7 that came to mind. Close your eyes for a minute (make sure no one is doing anything dangerous at the moment before you do) and just imagine, an empty, quiet house (oh those were the days). What are you going to do with yourself? Here is what I do when the kids aren’t around!
Things I Do When the Kids Aren’t Around
Binge watch trashy TV
You know you do this too. When the kids aren’t around, that always seems like the perfect time to catch up on all the mindless TV I never get to watch. I get the couch to myself and change the channel from the mind numbing kid shows that play on loop to something more adult, like a bunch of rich housewives bickering about who wore the dress better.
Yea, sometimes this happens when the kids aren’t around. When I do it, I am always reminded of how much easier it is to actually clean a room when you don’t have a mini tornado following your every move, taking things out that you just put away. I can actually wipe down a table, turn around and it is still clean! I should really do this more often.
You know all that food you like to hide away because, well, sometimes momma doesn’t like to share? Yea, while I sit and watch my trashy TV, I indulge in those snacks. I just have to be sure to hide all the evidence!
Crank up the tunes
I play music a lot when the kids are home, but when they aren’t home, that’s when I get to crank it up and dance around the house! (Yes, I do that). Sometimes this helps jumpstart that cleaning I mentioned earlier as well. Hey when you have a toddler around, you can’t get the decibels too high, I am not trying to hurt the tiny ears.
For real, sometimes once the kids get home and I am thrown back into mommy-mode, I often wonder, ‘What did I do while they were gone? I wasted the whole day!’ When I know I am going to be alone for a while, my brain goes into overload with all the possibilities of things I can do and get done that seem to not get done when they are walking around. And then they come back and, and everything is still as it was when they left. Tell me I am not alone in this?
Uninterrupted sleep, during the day? Pretty sure I haven’t seen this kind of sleep since my college days. Actually, a nap sounds really good right about now.
A shower, much like sleep, has also been interrupted by kids for years now. Whether one is crying, or searching for me, or woken up from a bad dream while I am in the shower, I can never seem to shave both legs in the same shower session, ever. Maybe after my nice nap, I will do just that!
I love my kids, don’t get me wrong, but being able to do things without one hanging on my leg and whining and the other needing help with her homework (which by the way, I am of no help with) feels like a glorious time! Admittedly, there are times nothing gets done, because well, as a mom with kids running around, I feel like I am constantly doing something so it feels nice to just do nothing.
