5 Ways to Relax More on Your Family Vacation #VRMonth

5-ways-to-relax-more-on-your-family-vacation

Let’s be honest, family vacations can be a bit overwhelming if not planned properly. In fact, it’s not uncommon to come home feeling like you need a vacation FROM your vacation! I took my son and younger cousin away for two days last summer. Just two days. While we had a great time, I was totally exhausted by the time we got back! All the running around, trying to find places that the kids both liked to eat, planning activities when it rained: so tiring!

I think back to the vacations we took when I was a teenager. My mom always used vacation rentals. Those were so much more relaxing! July just happens to be National Vacation Rentals Month! If you’re planning a family vacation, I highly recommend checking out  Wyndham Vacation Rentals. Why? Let me tell you! In fact, let me give you five great ways you’ll find a vacation rental more relaxing on your family getaway!

5 Ways to Relax on Your Family Vacation

Did you know that, according to a recent Wyndham Vacation Rentals study, 92% of vacation rental travelers say they feel more relaxed after a trip spent in a vacation rental home compared to other lodging options? That’s a pretty staggering number! So how do you relax more in a vacation rental?

Cook your own meals: To me, the most relaxing thing about staying in a vacation rental is access to a full kitchen to cook your own meals. Yes, we went out to lunch often, but I remember my mom made breakfast and dinner in the rental most nights. Breakfast is the biggest plus. I do not like getting dressed before getting my coffee! The ability to eat my breakfast in peace without rushing to a continental meal or getting fully ready to go to a cafe down the street is absolute bliss.

Skip the wake up callsSince you don’t have to rush to get to a specifically-timed breakfast, you can skip the wake-up calls and actually sleep in. Isn’t that the whole point of a vacation? Plus, when you stay at a vacation rental, you typically have more than one room. Put your early risers in one area and your late sleepers in another. That way everyone can get up at their own pace.

Don’t over-schedule: One of the biggest mistakes we make on vacations is assuming we have to see everything there is to see at our destination. Pick a few places that you all agree you really must see, then work them into your itinerary. Leave a little time for relaxing in your vacation rental. Catch up on your reading, grab some groceries from a local farmer’s market and experiment with different dishes or play games together. If you’re taking a beachside vacation, then just leave a wide open space of time to relax on the sand!

Fret less about money: Worrying about money during your family vacation can really ruin a good time. If you’re eating out for every meal, your entire budget can vanish with nothing to show for it (except maybe heartburn!). Knowing that you can eliminate a large chunk of your budget by cooking meals at your vacation rental can soothe your worries. Being able to do laundry when you spill something on your last clean outfit is also a major weight off your shoulders.

Be yourself all the time: Maybe the best part of a vacation rental is the fact that you can always just be yourself because you have all the privacy you need. Wear your jammies until 4 in the afternoon if you’re hanging out at the rental all day. Walk around with your robe on as you eat your breakfast.  Leave the curlers in to do the laundry! When you stay at a hotel, you’re on show the minute you leave the room. In a vacation rental, it’s like being at home. You can be yourself, just on vacation!

Wyndham Vacation Rentals gives you all the things you love about being home-like fully-equipped kitchens, a living room to hang out in, multiple bedrooms to accommodate the whole family- plus everything you love about being on vacation! You can even get the added bonus of hotel-like amenities at many of its properties, including shuttle service, a concierge desk to help you find great family activities and housekeeping so you don’t have to do the cleaning. It really is the best of both worlds. Plus, when you book with Wyndham Vacation Rentals, you can rest easy knowing your vacation is backed by the  Vacation Rental Bill of Rights.

  1. This completely changed my perspective on family vacations! I really love the idea of cooking breakfast on our own rather than waking up early for the breakfast calls. And I have to agree, thinking about how much to spend all the time during a vacation will truly ruin the fun.

  2. I have been saying it for years. I need a vacation after our vacation. Sometimes we try to pack in so much fun that we forget to just sit back and enjoy where we are.

  3. Wonderful & very useful tips. Relaxing while on vacation is a major issue with a lot of people, your tips can be very helpful to anyone who has problems relaxing.

  4. The first three are the big ones for us. We did a vacation rental the last big vacation we took and I don’t think I’ll ever do a hotel again.

  5. These are some great tips!! I have the problem of always over planning! Always so much I wanna do and never enough time so I cram things and end up going insane because of it lol

  6. I had to learn not to over schedule. I’m so OCD that I have to know what the agenda is at all the time. My mate is the exact opposite and I’ve had to adjust. I appreciate the change as it allows for a better vacation.

  7. We over-scheduled on our last vacation, but we still had a blast. We will try to relax more on our next vacation though, and I hope we get to have a vacation this year. We need it!

  8. I do like your list. I never do wake up calls because I get up so early, but I could curtail waking everyone up for breakfast and let THEM sleep in!

  9. To my mom, she does not appreciate us cooking our own meals when in vacation. It’s about just feeling relaxed without worrying about buying and preparing ingredients for cooking. Being served in a restaurant is better for us.

Overscheduling I think is what a lot of people do. They have so many things that they want to see or do, and they try to cram as much into a day as possible. Then they wind up running everywhere trying to do it all and they are exhausted by the end of the day.

  11. These are some great tips, we decided to skip this years vacation and do it big next year. The amount of stress is what actually lead to this cancellation since the kids seem to be more energetic than I can handle alone. Hopefully some friends or family can go with us next year and help out, your list really helped me with the stress I felt I had to deal with and now i feel like next year can’t come sooner.

  12. I love the idea of making a vacation more personal and comfortable! We are in Italy for the summer and it’s like a second home to us. It’s so nice to come back to that familiarity every year!

  13. These are wonderful tips. Over-scheduling is a huge turn off for me. I rather go with the flow. Not saying scheduling is a bad thing but don’t cram your day too full that your stressed out to do everything.

When planning a vacation, you should always plan on eating out 99% of your meals even if you stay in always hotel. If your hotel has a mini fridge, head to the supermarket and pick up sandwich makings, chips, and soda for always cheap meal or two.

Look for hotels that serve dinner now.

  14. These are great tips for vacation relaxation! I completely agree that it does take a load off, to be able to go to the grocery store and cook where you are staying rather than eating out all the time. Over scheduling is also a huge problem in my family!

  15. Great tips and thanks for sharing the sweepstakes. Over scheduling is always the main thing with me on vacation, I want to see top 10 places and we usually do not have the days to cover them at leisure. Hubby on the other hand likes to see only the top 1 place lol.

  16. Great tips for relaxing on a vacation. But I really want to enjoy eating out on vacation, even breakfast.
Maybe because I cook 3 meals everyday. But I am always ready for a sweepstake and if I win, maybe someone else will do the cooking.

  17. These are all great tips. I have a terrible time relaxing on vacations because I always worry about money. This time I’m going to take a deep breath and relax.

  18. I think we try to fit too much fun into our vacations that we forget to relax! We used to get hotels with kitchens when I was little too. It was less stressful than taking 3 little girls out for meals I am sure lol.

  19. Not overscheduling is huge for me! I always try to jam pack so much end and end up stressed. I”m going to try to work on that in the future so I can relax more!
