Last week, I told you about a few of my favorite spontaneous summer fun activities that I like to sneak into a work day at home. Of course, I don’t spend my entire summer indoors behind a computer! My son and I love to go on adventures whenever we can! Fortunately, we live near a lake, so adventure is often just a short drive down the road.
Spontaneous Adventures = Summer Fun!
When it comes to summer activities, I’m not a big planner. I like the freedom of saying “okay, I’m all caught up on work for today, let’s go somewhere!” To me, part of the adventure is never knowing when you’re going to start one! Besides, if we make plans, there’s always a good chance that they’ll get rained out. We have daily thunderstorms here during the summer.
Jacob has a lot of cool “explorers” gear that he’s collected over the years. Binoculars, little scopes that let you check out underwater life, nets for catching bugs (not my favorite thing!) and more. During the summer, we keep a lot of that stuff in the garage near the door so we can grab and go. Then when I say “let’s adventure!” we can just head out the door before the excitement wears off and we remember how hot it is outside! Seriously, if we don’t go when the mood strikes, we don’t go at all.
Even though I don’t plan our adventure times, I do plan ahead for safety! I keep a travel bag loaded with essentials for the day, like towels and, of course, sunscreen. When it comes to sun safety, I don’t compromise. I may let my son stay up way past his bedtime during the summer or indulge in extra treats, but I never skimp on the sunscreen.
Protect Your Adventurers with Banana Boat®
Protecting your adventurers from the damaging sun rays is easy with Banana Boat®. Their sunscreens are designed to protect your family in seven conditions: sun, pool, water, ocean water, wind, sweat, sand and even extreme heat. They provide safe and effective broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection for everyone in your family.
My favorite Banana Boat® product is the Banana Boat® Sport Performance® with PowerStay Technology™. It comes in an easy spray bottle and has amazing staying power, so it protects my son even when he’s running around exploring nature.
Of course, even the best sunscreen needs YOU to make it work. Knowing how to apply it is just as important as knowing what type to get. Check out these easy sun safety tips!
- Always apply 1 ounce (which is the same as two tablespoons) evenly over your child’s body at least 30 minutes before leaving the house.
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours or after your child gets out of the water. Even with waterproof and sweat-proof sunscreen, this is just a good habit to have.
- Make sure you take enough with you for the entire day and the entire family. If you know you’ll be out for 6 hours, you need enough to reapply 3 times.
- Apply sunscreen for ALL outdoor activities. That means even if you’re adventuring deep in the woods on a cloudy day. Just because you can’t see the sun shining through doesn’t mean it’s not there!
Following these important sun safety tips will keep your little adventurers and you safer! Bring home fun memories, not sunburns and skin damage! For more on how you and your family can have fun and be safe in the sun this summer, visit here!
