DuPont Calls for Common Food Security Metrics, #foodsecurity

DuPont Commissions Interactive Tool to Foster Collaboration

Regardless of your income level, one thing is certain. You have to eat. No matter where you live in the world, you need to have access to safe and affordable food. However there was really no way to know how accessible this food was depending on where you live. One major company thinks that this should change. Ellen Kullman, Chair and CEO of DuPont said that the key to increasing global food security is having common food safety metrics.

Global Food Security Index: Why?

We share a common goal of food security but we do not share a common goal, said Ellen Kullman! To increase food security, we need to measure it in a global way!  We need to analyze the same metrics, data to address the problem properly! This what the Global Food Security Index is about : a global measuring tool of food insecurity/Security.

Global Food Security Index: what is it and how?

In order to address the food security problem properly,  DuPont commissioned the Global Food Security Index that was launched by the Economist Intelligence Unit on July 10th, 2012. It measures different levels of food security by answering a crucial question: How can consumers in each country easily access sufficient amounts of safe, high-quality and affordable food?

The home for this tool is www.foodsecurityindex.eiu.com. Some of the features of this tool include:

  • Analysis of key findings
  • Definition of 25 indicators that measure food affordability, accessibility, availability, nutritional value and safety.
  • A country details page that allows a food-security drill down into individual economies
  • The ability to compare multiple countries simultaneously and adjust rankings by indicators
  • Adjustable weightings to allow for scenario planning
    just to name a few.
