Best Ways To Save Money On Roaming Charges When Travelling

Roaming charges can be really expensive while traveling. However, you still have to stay in touch with your clients and family when you are on the road. How are you going to do that? You may be looking for best ways to save money on roaming charges when travelling.

Tips to save money on roaming charges

Turn off data roaming

One way to save money on roaming charges is to turn off the data roaming feature on your cell phone. You can use up a lot of your minutes with this feature turned on without even realizing it. This is especially true if you get a lot of email messages on a regular basis. Consider using computers in Internet cafes or even the hotel’s wi-fi connection as an alternative to using your phone’s data plan. I know it is not as immediate as being able to reply right away to client’s inquiries, but you will still be able to stay in touch if you turn off your data roaming feature. This will come in doubly handy if you are traveling for pleasure and tend to err on the side of the workaholic.

Disable apps

I know you have grown accustomed to having your apps. However your apps are also causing your cell phone bill to be higher than necessary. Consider turning these off while you are travelling if you want to save money on your roaming charges.

Use other ways to communicate with clients

Think outside of the tecnhology box when you are traveling. What else can you use to connect with your clients? I touched on this before, but it is worth repeating here.

  • You can use Google Hangout, the service on Google+ that allows you to talk to people in real time, when you are traveling. You can also use Skype or FaceTime if you have an iPhone. You will need a wi-fi access to use these features. You can get one in the hotel you are staying in or in some airports.
  • You could also see if there is a FedEx Office nearby. You can usually rent the computers there for a while and that will give you time to get caught up on your work.
  • Talk during your company’s free time. Check your mobile plan to see when there is time you can use your phone for free. If your company has a stipulation like that, use it. That will also help you save money on your cell phone bill while you are traveling.

Roaming charges can really add up while you are traveling. You have to be creative and determine what the best ways are to save money on roaming charges when travelling. What are some things you do to save money on your cell phone bill when traveling away from home?

  1. Great advice for those who travel. Unfortunately, I’m behind the times. I have an old phone that I only use for texting and I rarely leave my neighborhood let alone my city or province.
