Toasting in the New Year! Party Drinks for Kids

Many adults are accustomed to having a few alcoholic drinks on New Year’s Eve. Of course this is not an appropriate activity for children or for those mothers that are expecting or nursing. It is nice if everyone has a special drink in order to toast in the new year. I recommend the following recipes served in festive drink ware. I generally get plastic champagne flutes.

Cherry Limeade

You will need:

  1. 1 12 oz can of lemon lime soda
  2. 3 T grenadine *
  3. 1 T lime juice
  4. crushed ice
  5. lime wedge and maraschino cherry to garnish

Mix first three ingredients well. (If you have a cocktail mixer glass this might be fun to use.) Pour over crushed ice and garnish.
*grenadine is non alcoholic, cherry juice uses to flavor and color drinks

Pink Drink

You will need:

  1. 3 oz ruby grapefruit juice
  2. 1 tsp grenadine
  3. ½ tsp lemon juice
  4. 3 oz ginger ale

Combine ingredients and serve over ice.

Shirley Temple

You will need:

  1. ½ cup orange juice
  2. ½ cup lemon lime soda
  3. 1 T grenadine
  4. 1 maraschino cherry

In a tall glass combine orange juice and lemon lime soda. Pour grenadine and let it sink to the bottom of the glass. Stir and then garnish with a cherry and straw.

Mock Tea Sangria

You will need:

  1. 1 10 oz package frozen raspberries, thawed
  2. 1/3 Cup sugar
  3. 1 family size tea bag
  4. 2 cups grape juice
  5. 1 lemon sliced
  6. 1 lime sliced
  7. 16 oz of orange soft drink, chilled
  • Process raspberries in a blender or food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides. Pour puree through a fine wire mesh strainer into a large container, discarding raspberry seeds.
  • Bring sugar and 3 cups water to a boil in a saucepan, stirring often. Remove from heat; add teabag. Cover and steep for 5 minutes.
  • Remove tea bag with a slotted spoon, squeezing gently; cool tea mixture slightly. Stir together raspberry puree, tea mixture, grape juice, and lemon and lime slices. Cover and chill 2-24 hours. Stir in orange soft drink and serve immediately over ice.

Virgin Pina Colada

  1. ½ Cup Coconut Milk
  2. 1 Cup pineapple juice
  3. ½ Cup soda water
  4. Pineapple slice for garnish

Mix all ingredients, whisk well. Serve in a glass over ice and decorate with pineapple slice.

These drinks can help you include everyone in the festivities. Many children will enjoy staying up to watch the ball drop. These are also nice to serve your designated drivers, pregnant guests or mothers with infants at home. Have a wonderful new year. We hope you join us in the new year at Our Family World.
