You can’t let healthy eating slide just because it is a holiday. You can’t have your boys and ghouls trick or treating on an empty stomach, do you? You want to make sure that all of those sweets actually make it home, right?  Let them pig out during Thanksgiving or Christmas. Your trick or treaters will have their fill of candy and other treats so here are some healthy Halloween treats for your kids.

Healthy Halloween Treats:  Seasonal foods

Halloween comes at the end of fall, a time when there are plenty of fresh harvest items to enjoy. Some ideas of fall foods are squash, pumpkins and apples. You can incorporate these into your healthy Halloween treats for fresh, (and often inexpensive) delights. You could also have an orange theme where all the foods you serve have to be healthy and orange.
One of the favorite Halloween traditions is the carving of the Jack-o-lantern. And as anyone who has ever carved a pumpkin knows, the glowing creation on your front steps on Halloween night leaves behind a pile of slimy pumpkin guts. However, you can use this pumpkin flesh to create delicious treats. You can make seasoned and roasted pumpkin seeds to serve to your guests. You can always experiment with flavors to create your own delicious versions.

Another bountiful harvest item around Halloween is the apple. Apples work great fresh, candied, and baked into cakes, muffins, and pies. You can also make applesauce! As a bonus you can even use apples in the time honored tradition of bobbing for apples.

Other Healthy Halloween Treats

If you are looking for another healthy Halloween treat idea, popcorn is always fun. You can take your favorite popcorn ball recipe and fashion ghosts instead of balls. You could get some cheese flavored popcorn to add some more orange to your decor. You could also put fresh-popped popcorn into disposable plastic gloves and then add some oranges (just slice the oranges and leave them in the peel) at the tips of the gloves for monster hands.

Peeled grapes not only make great fake eyeballs, they make great healthy snacks. You can peel some and use them for the haunted house. You could also put some on a platter and serve as snacks.Don’t forget the cheese. Kids love cheese. You can serve cheese that is orange on top of crackers for another healthy Halloween snack.

Getting creative

You can always turn your kid’s favorite foods into Halloween dishes with a little creativity. Food coloring can turn ordinary foods into creepy monster dishes. Decorate cupcakes with licorice legs and candy eyes to create spiders. Or simply get a little creative with how you serve everyday items to design your own spooky feast. Halloween does not have to mean a scary waistline in November. With a little creativity and planning, you can serve healthy Halloween recipes to your kids and their friends.
