Kids Owning Their Space Through Room Design Fun

One of the first things we do as adults when we move into a new apartment or a new home is to decorate, to make the space our own. We take great comfort in designing our surroundings to best suit who we are. Kids are no different, except for the fact that their sanctuary is their room, and it should not only reflect who they are, but also who they want to be.Below is a list of 5 things to think about as you start to create a unique and “kid-friendly” space.
Involve Your Child

Designing a child’s room can be fun and exciting, but the most important thing is to make sure your child is involved throughout the entire process. Having a hand in the design and “construction” of the room provides a child with a sense of ownership, which in turn nurtures a responsible spirit and a child who is much more likely to take care of their room and everything within it. In addition, hanging hand-painted artwork is a great way to build your child’s self-esteem and setting out personal photos reinforces the importance of family and friends.

Set a Budget

Modifying the look of a room doesn’t have cost a fortune, but it is important to know before you do anything how much you’d like to spend. This information will determine what you plan to purchase versus what you’d like to repurpose or make yourself. While new furniture can be costly, a few cans of paint and some new accessories can completely change the look of a room without breaking the bank. In fact, utilizing furniture and accessories from other parts of your house (or even ones that have been put away in storage) is a great way to save money and to breathe new life into forgotten items. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Select a Theme / Color Scheme

Focus on your child’s favorite pastimes, cartoon characters they identify with, and the job they hope to have someday. This is one room in the house that should not reflect your personality, but rather your child’s. Ask lots of questions: What is your favorite color? What are you looking forward to doing most in your new room? If you were to design your perfect room, what would it look like? Asking questions up front is one way to ensure you create a space where your child feels comfortable just being him or herself. A few design theme ideas: fairytales, outer space, sports, under the sea, and jungle animals. The sky is truly the limit.

The Role Functionality Plays

Spend ample time on room layout; you definitely want to utilize the space to the best of your ability. Determine if there will be different zones in the room: sleeping, playing, reading, etc. Lofting the bed provides added space while daybeds serve a dual purpose (sleeping and relaxing). Don’t forget about a desk/workstation. Having a quiet spot to work on homework and other projects is essential.

The Importance of Organization

Storage is a key component in any room, especially a child’s bedroom, so make it a priority. There are so many wonderful storage solutions available, you just need to figure out what works best for you and your child, whether that includes shelving units, baskets, closet storage systems, see-through containers, or a combination of them. For ease of use, try to focus on a system that allows for quick and easy clean-up/organization.

Helping your child decorate his or her room will definitely make you feel like a kid again while providing the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with a loved one. So remember: be creative, have fun and enjoy the adventure.
