When Will You Need to Start Wearing Maternity Clothes During Your 2nd Pregnancy?

When do you move to maternity clothes with your second pregnancy? If you're like most women, probably a lot sooner than when you started wearing them with your first baby!

When do you move to maternity clothes with your second pregnancy? If you’re like most women, probably a lot sooner than when you started wearing them with your first baby! Some women even notice certain types of pants getting a little snug before they get that positive pregnancy test. Of course, every woman is different and weight gain during pregnancy depends on so many factors. Check out a few things to consider that will help you know when the time is right to move into maternity clothes.

When to Move to Maternity Clothes with 2nd Pregnancy

For the most part, you will not see much weight gain or other body changes in the first 3 months of your pregnancy or the early stages of your 2nd trimester. Chances are, you’ll be able to get away with wearing your non-maternity clothes during this time, as long as they’re not too snug to begin with (skinny jeans and such will most likely get uncomfortable way before you even “pop out” during your pregnancy). However, after that time, you will want to consider wearing maternity clothes or at the very least, larger clothing. There are a couple of things you will want to consider when it comes to the specific timing of wearing maternity clothes.

  • Size of the uterus- It is important to understand how the uterus grows when preparing for maternity clothes. By the end of your 1st trimester, your uterus has grown to just above your pelvic bone. At the end of the 2nd trimester, your uterus has grown to where your belly button is. After that time, the upper part of your belly will continue to grow progressively, until you give birth.
  • Body shape– So, somewhere around the 4th month of your pregnancy, you may notice that your clothes may be getting a bit tighter, especially when you wear jeans. While it is different for every woman, you probably won’t start showing that you are pregnant until you are in your 5th month of pregnancy. This is around the time most women will make the transition to maternity clothes.

Maternity Clothes Sizing

Maternity clothing sizes usually follow pre-pregnant sizes. For instance, if you normally wear a size 10 when you are not pregnant, you will likely wear a size 10 in maternity clothes. When you are in the 6th or 7th month of your pregnancy, you may find that you need to go up a size or two, depending on your weight gain.

Your personal fashion style

Your taste in clothing will also play a role in when you’ll need to move to maternity clothes during your 2nd pregnancy (or any pregnancy, for that matter). If you lean towards the loose and flowing to begin with, you can probably get away with wearing your regular clothes a lot longer. However, if you’re all about the skinny jeans and body-hugging tops, you’ll get uncomfortable a lot faster.

Again, remember that these are just guidelines. You’ll know when it’s time to move into maternity clothes when you can no longer zipper up your favorite pants, or when your favorite top becomes more of a crop top!
