Light some candles

Light several candles throughout your home. Candles serve several purposes. They provide your home with ambience as well as light and heat. Candles come in an array of sizes, colors and scents so choose your favorites for your home.

Dress in layers

It is cheaper for you to keep your body warm than trying to heat your entire home. Wear a pair of thermal underwear or a sweatshirt instead of turning the heat up in your home.

Hot water bottle in sheets

To stay warm in bed at night, try this awesome hack. After dinner, fill up 4 or 5 hot water bottles, ensuring they are well-sealed. Then slip them between your sheets on your bed and it will be warm and toasty when bedtime comes around. Bonus: you’ll feel very Little House on the Prarie with this frugal hack! This is how people warmed up their beds in the old days!

Close off unused rooms

Do you have a spare bedroom that you don’t use often? Close it off during the winter months so you aren’t heating areas of your home that don’t need to be heated. However, you want to be sure you don’t have the room too cold as you could run the risk of frozen pipes.

Cook and bake more

Many people do a lot of cooking and baking during the cold winter months. After you are done for the day, after you turn off the oven, leave the oven door open so the excess heat can escape into your home, warming it up. Obviously, if you have kids or pets, this isn’t the best idea. If you live alone or your children are old enough to know to stay away from the hot stove, though, it really does work wonders! Cover doors and windows

If your doors and windows are not blocked off in some way, you may be allowing heat to easily escape from your home. You can help with this by putting up thick drapes in the winter months or covering the windows with plastic. Drafts also are common in the winter time so be sure you cover the bottom of the doorways to keep heat in.

Turn on ceiling fan

While many people think a ceiling fan is only to be used in winter to cool the home off, they can also provide your home with warmth in the winter. Hot air rises right? So, set your ceiling fans so they turn in a clockwise direction. This will help push all the warm air back into the rooms of your home.

Even if you use just one or two of these frugal hacks, you should be able to turn the temperature down in your house enough to see some savings. Use as many as possible to really maximize your savings and keep that heating bill down this winter!
