5 Items I Wish I Packed on My First Cruise

Do you know what to bring on your Caribbean cruise? Don't forget some important items! Check out 5 things you'll definitely want in the middle of the ocean!

Do you know what to bring on your Caribbean cruise?  One of our fellow mom friends recently asked that very question. Let’s hear from her!

“Hello mommies! Have any of you been on a cruise? If so, what must have items should I be bringing with me? This is not a cruise with mandatory formal wear evenings. We are going from Miami through to Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexico and the Bahamas. We are leaving in December.”

How exciting! I’m kind of jealous, honestly. Okay, so let’s talk cruise necessities! A cruise is not like any other vacation where you take a flight to a destination and hotel and stay for a week and go home.  This is even better!  There are a few things you need to think about when going on a cruise, here are a few of my personal suggestions.

Motion sickness meds:

You may not think you have a problem with motion sickness (neither did I) but that first day at sea can do weird things to your equilibrium, especially if the seas are rough (like they were for me on my first cruise!)  Also, it can be worse depending on where you are in the ship.  The closer you are to the inside and bottom of the ship, the worse is can be.  My first night I felt like my bed was moving!  It is just a precaution, better safe than sorry right? You have a few options here, from SeaBands  to ginger candies or capsules to actual OTC medications.

Comfy shoes:

Of course you want to look amazing, but keep in mind that depending on what you plan to do on your excursions, you might be doing a lot of walking or hiking when you get off the ship.  You don’t want to be walking around with blisters and band-aids on your pretty pedicured feet right?  Whether they are worn in sandals or cute sneakers that you have broken in, bring some comfy footwear.

Hat:

The sun in the Caribbean is not like the sun anywhere else.  It is strong and hot!  On my honeymoon, I had to borrow my new husband’s hat he picked up in Turks and Caicos because our day on the beach was doing a number on my head!  So whether you are a baseball cap kind of girl or a Kentucky Derby hat girl, bring something (or buy something!) to protect your head (at least if you are going to be out in the sun for long periods of time)

Dress:

Even if your cruise doesn’t require formal dinner attire, you still want to look cute!  I don’t mean you have to pack a ball gown (who wants to do that anyhow?) I just mean to pack some super cute sundresses.  You can always dress it up or down with accessories.

Departure clothing:

Once your fabulous vacation is over and it is time to go home, you don’t want to heading back to the cold and snow in shorts and a tank.  This was always the dilemma I faced when traveling in the winter to a warmer climate; it’s hot when I leave, and cold when I arrive, so what do I wear?  My suggestion is to wear something comfy for travel, like your go-to yoga pants.  You can wear a tank or t-shirt, but bring a sweatshirt with you (the plane is always a chilly place anyways).  While it might be frigid when you arrive back home, you can always leave your parka in the car.

There are so many things to do on (and off) the ship, you won’t need a book to read or trashy beach magazines to keep you occupied unless of course you plan to sip your morning coffee on your balcony, but then why wouldn’t you be enjoying the ocean view?

  4. I’ve never been on a cruise and am a little hesitant – I think my anxiety would take over even more so than flying in a plane! But these are definitely great tips to remember should I ever overcome my fear.

  5. I have to admit, I am very hesitant to get on a cruise ship. I am not one for open water. But everyone I know who has went, has always had a blast. As far as the motion sickness options, now that is something I can use, as I get motion sickness in the car sometimes.

  6. As soon as I convince my husband he won’t get eaten by sharks, I’m headed on my first cruise! The tip about departure wear is key…we live in Maine and that makes for colder weather than most cruise destination climates!
