9 Great Uses for Unused or Unwanted Coffee Mugs

9-great-uses-for-unused-or-unwanted-coffee-mugs

Each time I spot a coffee mug in a store, I tend to buy it.

I have a collection of them. It is my weakness, and I am working on it. In the meantime, I need to make a good use for these mugs.

The obvious one is drinking coffee or tea or a delicious hot chocolate.

But when you end up with more than 20 on hand and no room to organize them, it’s a very good idea to use them for other purposes other than the original one.

Here are some great uses for unused or unwanted coffee mugs.

Great Uses for Unused or Unwanted Coffee Mugs

Plant pot-

Coffee mugs are the ideal size for a small plant. You can even plant herbs like basil in a coffee cup. Just remember that mugs don’t have drainage holes so ensure you don’t overwater the plant.

Candle-

For those who love to make candles as a hobby, try using a coffee mug instead of a typical glass jar. All you have to do is pour the melted wax into the mug, add a wick and let it set.

Gift container-

If you are stumped on a gift for a co-worker, how about a coffee mug filled with candy or coffee beans?

Bathroom organizer-

Coffee mugs look great on the bathroom sink filled with razors and toothbrushes. You can have one mug for each person in your household.

Work break room-

Your co-workers have probably cracked, broken or stained at one time or another. So, if you have numerous coffee mugs just sitting around in your kitchen cabinets, gather them up and put them in the break room at work.

Cooking utensils-

Place a coffee mug on your stovetop and use it while you are cooking for cooking utensils. This will save your stovetop from getting messy with gravy or tomato sauce.

Straw holder-

Set a coffee mug on your kitchen counter or kitchen table and fill with drinking straws. Your kids will never have to hunt high and low for straws again when they need one.

Loose change-

Coffee mugs are ideal for storing loose change that you find around your home. Next time you are looking for loose change, you will know exactly where to look.

Desk organizer-

There are times when it is a chore and a half to keep your office neat and organized. They can be used to keep all your pens and pencils organized.

How about you? Do you have unused coffee mugs around?

  1. I have too many mugs filling up my cupboard space! Most of them were gifts so I hate to part with them..but really, I drink coffee from the same ol mug every day..how many more do I need than that? lol

  2. I think I’m hoarding a few coffee mugs so this is timely. I am thinking of just donating them though, I have too much STUFF in general.

  3. All great ideas for old coffee mugs. I’ve used them as pen/pencil holders and to organize desk accessories. I love the idea of using them as a planter. Usually I just donate them when I’m done. My husband hates when we have a bunch of mis-matched or chipped ones, so I’m constantly replenishing our supply.

  4. Oh my gosh I LOVE the idea of using a coffee mug as a plant holder! I always want to buy mugs at the store, but I’m not a tea or coffee drinker so I have to stop myself. This post might help me justify buying some more ;)

When I’ve got too many coffee mugs I usually end up donating them to a charity shop. Now I might use them for growing herbs. Thanks for the ideas :-)
