I am a true believer in the following: You can enjoy outdoor family activities in every season. You just need to be creative and at the same simple. The simplest things are the best. Besides  Fresh air is vital for everybody. It allows kids to burn off that excess of energy or sugar. It allows adults (like me who have a desk job) to stretch legs and enjoy some family time. So go outside this fall and enjoy the crisp air and beautiful foliage. Enjoy the following  fun autumn backyard activities. Make sure to have a delicious hearty soup ready or a hot chocolate.

Fun Autumn Backyard Activities for You to Enjoy as a Family

Make pinecone bird feeders

Pinecone bird feeders are easy to make and backyard birds will love snacking on them. All you need are pinecones, string, peanut butter and bird seed. Tie a piece of string on the top of each pinecone, for hanging. Then, spread peanut butter on each of the pinecones and roll in the bird seeds until well coated. Then, hang the pinecones around your backyard. You can have fun watching the birds flock to the yard. Try and identify which birds are flying into your yard.

Have a scavenger hunt

Kids love scavenger hunts and fall is the ideal time to have one in your backyard. You will need a scavenger hunt list with items to find, a pail or bag to hold items that are found and a pencil or crayon for marking items off the list once found. If you need helping making a list, here are a few ideas of things that kids can find: acorns, leaves, pinecones, pine needles and ant hills. Each child gets a list of things to find, pail or bag and pencil or crayon. You can even make this easy fall craft mobile.

Identify insects

Kids are intrigued by new things and bugs also happen to be intriguing to kids. For this backyard activity, you will need a glass jar with plastic lid. Yes, that is all you need. Poke some holes in the plastic lid so the critters have access to air. If you want, you can also add things like dirt and rocks into the jar. Have each kid collect one insect at a time so they can study and identify it. Have the kids figure out what kind of bug it is. You can check online at sites like www.bugguide.net and www.insectidentification.org for insect identification. Also, have them figure out where the bug lives, what they may eat and whether it is a baby or adult.

Gather some beautiful foliage

One of the best things about fall is the foliage. Why don’t you gather some of it  to preserve those beautiful leaves. You can even make a bouquet holder with the fall leaves.
