Looking for a quick and fun healthy breakfast recipe for kids and the family? Then try this cottage cheese  puff in a mug! It’s so much fun to make and eat, your kids will look forward to breakfast!

The recipe is inspired by the book 250 Best Meals in a mug (affiliate link).  I am in love with this book: the recipes are easy and quick. They are also organized by meal: breakfast, main meal, dessert. Last week, I shared this breakfast recipe: Maple Berry Compote. Although I loved it and it became a staple in my home, I wanted to try another breakfast recipe in a mug! So I went with this Cottage Cheese puff in a mug as a fun healthy breakfast recipe! I am a cottage cheese fan. I usually add it to my salad  but I have never tried it in a breakfast meal.

Cottage Cheese Puff in a Mug: A Healthy Breakfast Recipe for the Whole Family

 Ingredients

  • A nice mug: 12 to 16 oz .
  • 1 1/2 tbsp all purpose or whole wheat flour. I went with all purpose one.
  • 1/4 tsp of baking powder.
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 TBSP of cottage cheese. The original recipe called for 1/4 cup. I tried it and I found it tasted too much sour so I tried it again with 2 TBSP of cottage cheese.
  • 3 Tbsp of shredded cheese. I went with Mozzarella. I did not even bother to shred but you can use this shredded mozzarella  I bet it will taste so good.
  • 2 tsp of vegetable oil
  • Optional: I added some shredded Butterball Turkey that I had in my fridge. It is added protein to the breakfast recipe. The original recipe called for ready-to-eat real bacon bites.

Make it

  • In the mug, whisk the flour, baking powder, egg, cottage cheese, cheese, meat (if you added), oil until well blended
  • Microwave on High for 60 to 75 seconds or until puffed.

Easy peasy. What I like about this healthy breakfast recipe is that it is quick to make. My teen can make it by himself. You can even prepare it ahead of time (except flour) and microwave it in the morning. It will save precious minutes for those on the go mornings. Serve it with a cup of milk and a homemade yogurt.

The book suggested the following variations of this breakfast recipe:

  • You can use goat cheese instead of Mozzarella. I am not a fan of goat cheese and I find it is a bit strong for the mornings.
  • You can replace the cottage cheese with Ricotta. I find it is an interesting variation as cottage cheese can be strong and some kids may not like that taste.

What do you think of this fun healthy breakfast recipe? Have you ever made a cottage cheese puff?

  1. I love cottage cheese so this looks like an easy, quick, tasty morning meal to try. I’ll probably use cheddar cheese or colby jack since I like those flavors that are a bit stronger. Goat cheese is too strong for me too. Looking forward to trying this. Thanks.

This sounds very interesting. And so easy to make as well as giving me some very needed extra minutes in the morning to get ready because it’ s so quick.

  3. I pinned this one as I know it will be a favorite around here! Thank you for sharing it. I am stoked about giving it the old taste test with my taste test picky panel!

  4. This looks awesome, with all ingredients I usually always have on hand, love this in the mug, so easy to make. Great recipe!!

    1. I have never tried cottage cheese in my recipes before. The texture used to turn me off but I admit it adds a nice flavor to dishes. To be used with moderation though. :-)
