Healthy Breakfast Recipe: Maple Berry Compote With Yogurt

September is Breakfast month and I am celebrating it with you by sharing easy, healthy breakfast recipe for kids and family. My grandfather used to say: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While it is true, many families and kids skip breakfast due to a tight schedule. I never skipped breakfast with my family (unless there was an emergency or kids were sick). My kids know they need to eat breakfast before going to school or starting the day. To entice them to eat it, I make sure to have it with them. If I can’t, my husband takes over. After all, we lead by example: if parents skip breakfast, kids will too.

So how do I make sure they don’t skip breakfast?

  • I wake them up at least 45 minutes before they need to go out. For my eldest, 30 minutes is enough. This way, they have enough time to wake up and have enough time to eat
  • I make sure they don’t eat just before going to bed. While they can have a cup of milk, or a fruit or a yogurt, I don’t allow any rich meal just before bed. They will wake up hungry enough to eat
  • I sit and EAT breakfast with them. I try to make it as a mini family meal.
  • I try to be creative and prepare easy and healthy breakfast recipes for my kids. The recipes need to be ready in under 10 minutes (sometimes this is all what I have, sometimes I have less)
  • I involve them with the breakfast recipe preparation: whether setting up the table, bringing the ingredients, forks, etc.

Those are few ideas that helped my kids with eating their breakfast at home, before leaving to school.

Ingredients for this healthy breakfast recipe for kids (and adults)

  • 16 OZ mug
  • 1 cup of frozen mixed berries
  • 6 tsp of pure maple syrup
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of plain Greek Yogurt
  • 2 tbsp of Granola or oat meal (optional)
  • You can add nuts to top it.

Directions

  • Combine the berries, 4 tsp of maple syrup and cinnamon
  • Microwave on High for 1 minute. Stir, then mash the berries. Microwave again for 60 seconds. Let cool
  • Spoon in the Yogurt, sprinkle with Granola, oat or nuts and drizzle some maple syrup.

It is an individual serving. I like it because kids can help you make it and older ones can make it by themselves. Plus, when you make it in individual servings like this, kids can easily customize their own. For example, if one child likes nuts and the other doesn’t, it’s easier to let them choose.
