Must Have Items For Camping

I have never been camping! Maybe because I am afraid of bugs or maybe because I don’t know what to bring as camping equipment! This year, I decided to take the leap and organize a fun camping weekend with my family! I was clueless, I did not know where to start and what to bring! I have already a tent and sleeping bags but don’t know what other camping equipment is required. So I reached for help from my passionate readers! And they were really helpful telling me which equipment I needed for my adventure

 Items You Need for Camping

  • Tarps:

Savannah suggested bringing tarps. They protect from rain and shades.   Try to put a large tarp under the tent..easier to hose down a tarp later than try to wash the bottom of the tent, and it’s no fun rolling up a tent when the bottom is all dirty (source: Savannah)

  • Insect repellant
  • Sun block
  • Extra long sleeve shirts: I would have never thought of that. We are in the middle of summer.
  • Extra blanket
  • Activity book. In my experience about a day and a half into the trip, kids get tired of so much going on and need something to reel them back in. (thanks to Kat)
  • 1st aid kit! It never fails my kids always get scratched up at camp and need band aids! (thanks to Amber)
  • Air mattresses and camp chairs to sit in to roast marshmallows. (Thanks Laura). My kids love marshmallows. We have to stock up on these.
  • A Coleman grill and fishing poles (thanks to Shannon). This would be fun. The boys will fish and girls will cook or vice versa!
  • Some suggested a camper or an RV. That’s a good idea but not within my means this year. I have to experience camping first and see how it goes.
  • Extra SHOES (thanks to Michelle)
  • A nice battery-powered fan or two (no breeze can be rough, plus bugs/birds can be loud. Thanks to Amy,
  • Cooking utensils (don’t forget tongs & a spatula). Thanks to Michelle.
  • Rope lights (attract less bugs),
  • Portable radio. I also suggest setting up your tent now & waterproofing the outside bottom half & all seams using a spray you can pick up at WalMart. Get a couple of cans, and follow the directions to make even strokes. Let it sun-dry completely. We had a terrible thunderstorm last time & didn’t have a drop inside.
  • Outdoor games like croquet or frisbee
Hope this camping list was helpful! It was helpful for me. I have most of the items. I need to find the others. I will check if my friend can lend me some camping equipment. Now I need to try this new adventure!
Thank you for all the fans who provided those great camping ideas!

  1. oh and a pan for washing your dishes, we bought tons of plastic colorful dishesfrom the dollar store and a dish rack and washed dishes on the picnic table when done eating

  2. TP, bring your own TOILET PAPER…seriously LOL and HAND sanitizer as well as one of the places we went to had a really hideous out house with no running water at all – we did the tent camping ONCE and ended up spending $3000 on a 8 man popup trailer (although that only lasted 3 yrs then we sold it and got a boat instead LOL)

  3. I can definitely use this list for our church camping trip next year! We missed the one this year so we’re really excited to prepare for the next one!

  4. That’s a great list! I would only add a few things: I strongly suggest that you have 2 separate coolers – 1 for drinks and 1 for foods. Since you reach in to get drinks more often, and you want to open food coolers as little as possible, it makes life much easier to have two. And don’t forget towels! You never know when they’ll come in handy! Oh, and FLASHLIGHTS are a must-have – they’re great for evening walks to find critters and for traversing back to your tent from the campfire without tripping. I grew up tent camping and have graduated to a toy-hauler RV, but the basic lists are all the same.

PS. As a precaution, I take along a bottle of bleach. When poured on ant bites and bee stings, it neutralizes the pain and slows the swelling.

  5. Love this list! I’m going camping for the first time in over a decade this summer, and I have no idea what to pack. My idea of camping is staying in a hotel on the floor! LOL. But my son is in cub scouts, and he really wants to try camping in a tent.
